Walkerton survives penalties, beats Mitchell, 6-3

The Mitchell Hawks failed to take advantage of their power play opportunities and the Walkerton Hawks shook off a number of penalties to win, 6-3.

The win by Walkerton clinched the best of seven series at 4-1.

The Hawks were sparked by Tyler Cunningham, who registered one goal. Cunningham scored 8:19 into the second period to make the score 4-3 Walkerton.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 6:10 into the third period. Eight fighting penalties were dished out along with seven game misconducts.

Walkerton put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Mitchell to score on any of its nine power plays. The Hawks were unable to stop the Hawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Walkerton eventually piled up 41 shots on goal.

Walkerton additionally got points from Jay Thomson, who also tallied one goal and two assists to lead the team in points, Calvin Penney, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Brendan Welsh, who also had one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Walkerton included Jake Baclay and Lauchlin Elder, who each put in one. More assists for Walkerton came via Carter Franks, Brooks Nelthorpe, Josh Deyell, and Ryan Hamelin, who contributed one each.

Mitchell was helped by Jake Finlayson, who registered one goal. Finlayson scored 13:58 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Walkerton. McKenzie Carter assisted on the tally. Mitchell also had goals scored by Joe McCarthy and Scott Fries, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Mitchell were Zach Goodhew, Bayley Boyes, Kyle Spence, Brett Stacey, and Tyler Pauli, who each chipped in one.

Tristan Lewis rejected 21 shots on goal for the Hawks. Walkerton totaled 40 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors and two majors and went 1-for-3 on the power play. For the Hawks, Hamelin, Brett Coulson, and Matt Shields were ejected from the contest. The Hawks' Graeme Lauersen stopped 35 shots out of the 41 that he faced. Mitchell ended with 29 minutes in penalty time with seven minors and three majors. Team's Ethan Adair and Colton Drinkwalter were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
