Woodstock beats Paris 2-1 after comeback scare

The Woodstock Navy Vets survived a determined comeback attempt by the Paris Mounties on the way to a 2-1 win.

Woodstock took a 2-0 lead during the second period, only to have Paris storm back on a Merrit Crumback goal 18:09 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The win gave the Navy Vets a 2-0 lead in the best of seven series.

Woodstock was led by goalie Michael Roefs, who finished with 34 saves while allowing one goal. Despite the solid performance, Roefs will actually see his goals against average rise, as it stood at 0.5 entering the contest.

The Mounties' power play was ineffective against the Navy Vets' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

Woodstock excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in eight chances.

The Navy Vets were led by Dan Haig, who finished with one goal and one assist. Haig scored 12:21 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Woodstock. Michael Nutt assisted on the tally. Justin Elms also scored for Woodstock.

Paris put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Woodstock to score on any of its seven power plays. The Mounties' offense rang up 35 shots on the Navy Vets' net.

Woodstock incurred 36 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Davis McLean rejected 16 shots on goal for Paris. The Mounties incurred 34 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
