Amherstburg holds on for 5-3 win against Wheatley

The Wheatley Sharks tried to dig themselves out of a three-goal hole, but the Amherstburg Admirals held on for a 5-3 victory.

Amherstburg made the score 5-2 on a goal by Mark Gangnon at 16:24 in the second period, and Wheatley got as close as 5-3 when Austin Thompson scored 9:03 into the third period.

The win gave the Admirals a 2-0 lead in the best of seven series.

Amherstburg forced the Sharks' goaltenders to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, totaling 32 shots and forcing 27 saves. Adam Leboeuf made 23 stops and Conner MacKinnon made four. The Admirals were ineffective while on the power play, as they were held to two goals off of nine man advantages.

Amherstburg additionally got points from James Brooks, who also registered one goal and one assist. Amherstburg also had goals scored by Mark Sobocan, Blake Rutckyj, and Luke Gangnon, who each put in one. More assists for Amherstburg came via Cody Leeming, who had two and Dan Matoski and Chad Copeland, who contributed one each.

Wheatley forced Amherstburg goalie Arren Romeril to work between the pipes, taking 34 shots.

The Sharks were led by Antonio Ciampa, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Ciampa scored on the power play 10:48 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Amherstburg. Wheatley had gotten the advantage when the Admirals' Kasey Basile was sent off for roughing after whistle. Brendon Anger picked up the assist. Wheatley also got a goal from Brett Bowman as well. In addition, Wheatley received assists from Mike Reid, Riley Enns, and Brian Johnson, who each chipped in one.

Arren Romeril made 31 saves for Amherstburg on 34 shots. The Admirals ended with 29 minutes in penalty time with 12 minors and one major. Amherstburg ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Gangnon was ejected from the game. The Sharks incurred 24 minutes in penalty time with 12 minors.
