Newmarket wins tough contest against Cobourg, 4-2

The Newmarket Hurricanes gutted out a close 4-2 win against the Cobourg Cougars.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Sam Hu's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

Newmarket was led by Hu, who finished with one goal. Hu scored 5:04 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Newmarket. Cameron Nicoll provided the assist.

The Hurricanes stifled Cobourg's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man.

Newmarket also had goals scored by Justin Wain, Jonathan Colley, and Ryan Young, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Newmarket were Ryan Shaw, who had two and Mitchell Duggan, Adam Smith, and Curtis Harvey, who each chipped in one.

The Cougars forced Hurricanes' goalies to work in net, totaling 35 shots and forcing 33 saves. Connor Ryckman made 30 stops and Tyler Richardson made three. Cobourg excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances.

The Cougars were helped by Connor Hogg, who registered one goal. Hogg scored 15:30 into the first period to make the score 2-2. Connor Armour assisted on the tally. Cobourg also got a goal from Spencer Holt as well. More assists for Cobourg came via Rylee McKinnon, Mitchell Gibson, and Cole Langan, who contributed one each.

Newmarket incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Cobourg's Tyler Lewis stopped 25 shots out of the 29 that he faced. The Cougars incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
