Mitchell downs Mount Forest in overtime, 6-5 (OT)

Scott Fries gave the Mitchell Hawks a 6-5 (OT) victory over the Mount Forest Patriots when he scored 4:00 into the extra period.

Mitchell overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Hawks was down 3-1 after a goal by Mount Forest's Shawn Lantz at 1:57 in the second period. Mitchell tied things up at 5-5 on a goal by Matt Van DeWalle at 19:51 in the third period.

The Hawks forced the Patriots' netminders to work without much rest, totaling 37 shots and forcing 31 saves. John Nixon made 11 stops and Kyle Sephton made 20. Mitchell excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. The Hawks outdid their season average for goals scored. Mitchell averages 2.6 goals per game. The Hawks' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in three goals.

Mitchell also got points from Van DeWalle, who also racked up three goals and one assist. More assists for Mitchell came via Cody Kropf and Colton Drinkwalter, who each chipped in one and Tyler Pauli and Adam Zehr, who contributed two each.

Mount Forest kept Mitchell's goalie busy throughout the game, and Graeme Lauersen made 49 saves on 54 shots.

The Patriots were helped by Luke Richardson, who registered two goals. Richardson scored the first of his two goals at 17 seconds into the second period to make the score 2-1 Mount Forest. Richardson's next tally made the score 5-4 Mount Forest with 1:21 left in the third period. Doug Costanzo assisted on the tally. Mount Forest additionally got points from Trevor Hughson, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Mount Forest also got a goal from Tyler McCracken as well. In addition, Mount Forest received assists from Doug Ardis, Todd Greer, and Mitch Betts, who each chipped in one.

The Hawks totaled 16 minutes in penalty time with three minors and two majors and went 1-for-7 on the power play. Team's Austin VanDerGeld and Wil Marcy were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Mount Forest ended with 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major.
