Walkerton shrugs off penalties, upends Mount Forest, 8-3

The Mount Forest Patriots failed to take advantage of their power play opportunities and the Walkerton Hawks shook off a number of penalties to win, 8-3.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 14:52 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

Walkerton forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and two majors for 36 minutes in penalty time. The Hawks had been averaging 28.0 minutes in penalties per game. Walkerton forced Mount Forest's netminders to work between the pipes, firing 40 shots and forcing 32 saves. John Nixon made 19 stops and Cole Wardlaw made 13. The Hawks surpassed their usual scoring output this season. This season, Walkerton averages 5.2 goals per contest. The Hawks was shut out on the power play, going scoring scoreless on 11 chances with a man advantage.

Walkerton was led by Brett Coulson, who grabbed two goals. Coulson scored the first of his two goals at 12:19 into the second period to make the score 4-1 Walkerton. CJ Arthur picked up the assist. Coulson's next tally made the score 8-2 Walkerton with 6:55 left in the third period. Walkerton also got points from Justin Donnelly(AP), who also registered one goal and one assist, Josh Deyell, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Jay Thomson, who also racked up one goal and two assists to lead the team in points, and Tyler Cunningham, who also had one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Walkerton included Alex Perrault and Justin McCrae(AP), who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Walkerton were Lauchlin Elder, who had two and Nathan Kramer, Ryan Hamelin, and Austin Russell, who contributed one each.

The Patriots' penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled seven minors and one major for 59 minutes in penalty time. Mount Forest surpassed its season average of 24.0 penalty minutes per game. The Patriots stifled the Hawks' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Walkerton was unable to stop Mount Forest from sending pucks towards the net, and the Patriots eventually piled up 31 shots on goal.

Mount Forest was helped by Brendon Aitken, who registered one goal. Aitken scored 14:17 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Mount Forest. Brady Becker provided the assist. Mount Forest also had goals scored by Doug Costanzo and Shawn Lantz, who each put in one. In addition, Mount Forest received assists from Luke Richardson, Kyle Hunter, Todd Greer, Mitch Betts, and Ian Bridgwater, who each chipped in one.

Erik Angeli recorded 28 saves for the Hawks. For Walkerton, Matt Shields was ejected from the game. The Patriots registered one goal on 10 power play opportunities. For Mount Forest, Bo Usidii and Trevor Hughson were ejected from the contest.
