Decatur Blaze uses shootout to best Soo Firehawks, 6-5 (4-2 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as Decatur Blaze defeated Soo Firehawks in a shootout 6-5 (4-2 SO).

The shootout featured eight attempts between both teams. Soo Firehawks got shootout goals from Christian Wilkins and Matthew MacLaren. In addition to the clincher, Decatur Blaze got shootout goals from Micah Young, Luka Znidarsic, and Duncan Irvine.

Ty Gehrken was all over the ice for Decatur Blaze, as he grabbed two goals in the win. Gehrken's tallies came at 14:46 into the first period to make the score 1-1 and 14:57 into the second to make the score 5-3 Decatur Blaze.

Decatur Blaze excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. Decatur Blaze bested its season scoring average. Decatur Blaze averages 3.2 goals per game.

Decatur Blaze also got points from Justus Kree, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Znidarsic, who also had one goal and two assists to lead the team in points, and Young, who also racked up one goal and one assist. In addition, Decatur Blaze received assists from Ryan Redpath, who had two and Blake Rowe, Garret Maged, Shane Johnson, and Nathan Zoellner, who contributed one each.

Soo Firehawks' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Decatur Blaze power plays. Soo Firehawks' offense rang up 59 shots on Decatur Blaze's net. Soo Firehawks surpassed its usual scoring output this season. This season, Soo Firehawks averages 2.6 goals per contest.

Soo Firehawks was led by Zach Eitrem, who finished with one goal and two assists. Eitrem scored 18:31 into the second period to make the score 5-4 Decatur Blaze. Mario Taranto provided the assist. Soo Firehawks additionally got points from Taranto, who also registered one goal and one assist and Dustin Brown, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Soo Firehawks included Zachary Lee and Quinton Myotte, who each put in one. More assists for Soo Firehawks came via MacLaren, who had one and Matthew Majic and Anthony Laaksonen, who contributed two each.
