Alpena Flyers erases deficit to stun Soo Firehawks, 4-3Northern Lights Arena Fri, Feb 13, 2015 Story by Narrative Science.
Alpena Flyers climbed out of a two-goal hole to beat Soo Firehawks, 4-3. Alpena Flyers never led in the game until netting the game winner. Alpena Flyers was down 3-1 after a short handed goal by Soo Firehawks' Mario Taranto at 11:21 in the second period. Alpena Flyers tied things up at 3-3 on a goal by Jared Kwiatkowski at 14:38 in the second period. Alpena Flyers scored the game winner on the power play at 19:30 in the second period on a goal by Kwiatkowski. Alpena Flyers' penalty kill excelled, as Alpena Flyers gave up zero goals despite allowing six power plays. Alpena Flyers forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up nine minors and one major for 23 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 19.0 minutes per game Alpena Flyers had been spending in the box. Alpena Flyers stifled Soo Firehawks' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Alpena Flyers was helped by Shane Dawson, who had one goal. Alpena Flyers also got points from Kwiatkowski, who also registered one goal and one assist. Soo Firehawks surpassed its season average of 20.0 penalty minutes per game. Alpena Flyers was unable to stop Soo Firehawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Soo Firehawks eventually piled up 32 shots on goal. Soo Firehawks was helped by Zach Eitrem, who tallied one goal. Eitrem scored 10:46 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Soo Firehawks. Daniel Bachynsky picked up the assist. Soo Firehawks also got a goal from Matthew Majic as well. In addition, Soo Firehawks received assists from Cody Therrian, who had two and James Goudreau and Michael Mullen, who each chipped in one. Hunter Myers rejected 29 shots on goal for Alpena Flyers. Alpena Flyers registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. Soo Firehawks' Mackenzie Bruce stopped 26 shots out of the 30 that he faced.
