Detroit Fighting Irish downs Alpena Flyers in overtime, 6-5 (OT)

Detroit Fighting Irish pulled out a 6-5 (OT) overtime victory over Alpena Flyers on a clutch goal by Nolan Jakrzewski.

Alpena Flyers could not complete its climb out of a two-goal hole. Detroit Fighting Irish made it 5-3 on a goal by Chase Tackett at 3:34 in the third period. Alpena Flyers pulled to within 5-4 on a goal by Greg Wenzel at 5:34 in the third period.

Chuck Hicks had a great game for Detroit Fighting Irish, netting two goals. Hicks scored on the power play at 12:53 into the first period to make the score 2-2 and again while 19:44 into the second to make the score 4-3 Detroit Fighting Irish.

Detroit Fighting Irish forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and one major for 41 minutes in penalty time. Detroit Fighting Irish surpassed its season average of 31.0 penalty minutes per game. Detroit Fighting Irish stifled Alpena Flyers' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man.

Detroit Fighting Irish also got points from James Smith, who also had one goal and one assist and Jakrzewski, who also racked up one goal and one assist. In addition, Detroit Fighting Irish received assists from Ken Winter, who had two and Shawn Mott, Richard Pinkowski, Robert Danyo, Jacob Hernandez, and Steven Sewell, who contributed one each.

Alpena Flyers forced Detroit Fighting Irish goalie Kory Dombrowski to work between the pipes, taking 33 shots. Alpena Flyers' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

Alpena Flyers was helped by Tait Froggett, who registered one goal and two assists. Froggett scored 3:15 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Alpena Flyers. Garret Bailey assisted on the tally. Alpena Flyers additionally got points from Brandon Bihn, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Bailey, who also had one goal and two assists. Alpena Flyers also got a goal from Tommy Hrynkiw as well. Other players who recorded assists for Alpena Flyers were Brett Farley, who had one and Mitchell Skiba, who had three.

Detroit Fighting Irish's Dombrowski stopped 28 shots out of the 33 that he faced. Detroit Fighting Irish registered one goal on three power play opportunities. Detroit Fighting Irish ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Tackett was ejected from the game. Connor Kassuba rejected 23 shots on goal for Alpena Flyers. Alpena Flyers incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
