Kern nets hat trick, leads Penn State University to 10-1 win over Naval Academy

A hat trick by Darby Kern was the highlight in Nitty Lions' 10-1 win against the Naval Academy Midshipmen.

Kern's first goal came 12:46 into the first period. He then added goals at 16:48 into the second and at 14:38 into the third.

The Penn State University Nitty Lions were led by goalie Aimee Little, who finished with 25 saves while allowing one goal. Little managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.41 prior to the game.

Naval Academy was unable to stop Penn State University from sending pucks towards the net, and the Nitty Lions eventually piled up 45 shots on goal. Penn State University found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, the Nitty Lions average 4.2 goals per contest. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with three goals.

Penn State University additionally got points from Claire Gauthier, who also racked up two goals and one assist and Katherine Murphy, who also registered one goal and two assists. Cara Mendelson also scored for Penn State University. More assists for Penn State University came via Ashton Schaffer, Devon Fisk, and Kelly Watson, who contributed one each and Anna Marcus, Cassandra Dunne, and Riley OConnor, who each chipped in two.

The Midshipmen managed to stay out of the box better than usual, finishing with one minor for two minutes in penalty time. Naval Academy finished below its season average of 7.0 penalty minutes per game.

The Midshipmen were led by Hannah Pereira, who scored the team's only goal. Pereira scored 4:30 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Naval Academy. Emily Buzzard assisted on the tally.

Penn State University ended with no penalties and went 0-for-1 on the power play. Sarah Hutchinson recorded 35 saves for Naval Academy. The Midshipmen registered zero goals on zero power play opportunities.
