Elmira rips Welland, 5-1

The Elmira Sugar Kings had a two-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 5-1 win over the Welland Jr. Canadians.

Welland was stymied by Elmira's netminder Jonathan Reinhart, who stopped 31 shots during the victory. Reinhart certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 3.23 entering the contest.

The Sugar Kings were led by Adam Brubacher, who had one goal and one assist. Brubacher scored 13:17 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Elmira. Mitch Klie provided the assist.

Elmira excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. The Sugar Kings kept the Jr. Canadians' goalie busy throughout the game, and Chris Janzen made 35 saves on 40 shots.

Elmira also got points from Eric Palazzolo, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Mitch Wright, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Elmira included Rob Kohli and Jamie Huber, who each put in one. More assists for Elmira came via Cash Seraphim, who had two and Alex Mutton, Ethan Skinner, and Zac Coulter, who each chipped in one.

Welland's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six Elmira power plays. The Jr. Canadians were held below their usual level of production. Welland averages 4.2 goals per game. The Jr. Canadians forced Elmira goalie Reinhart to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots. Welland's normally stingy defense allowed more goals than usual. The Jr. Canadians give up 1.7 goal per game.

Welland was led by Kris Melna, who scored the team's only goal. Melna scored 6:43 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Gabe Ruggi picked up the assist.

The Sugar Kings incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. The Jr. Canadians incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
