Ancaster beats Thorold 6-0 as Hughes gets hat trick

Ben Hughes netted a hat trick to lead the Ancaster Avalanche over the Thorold Blackhawks, 6-0.

Hughes' first goal came 8:13 into the first period. He then added goals at 14:17 into the second and at 14:41 into the second.

Ancaster was boosted by Blake Richard, who turned in a shutout with 25 saves. Richard managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.22 prior to the game.

The Avalanche's penalty kill excelled, as Ancaster gave up zero goals despite allowing seven power plays.

The Avalanche stifled Thorold's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Ancaster's defensive play was more effective than usual against the Blackhawks. The Avalanche gives up 2.9 goals on average per game. Ancaster's offense rang up 34 shots on Thorold's net. The Avalanche surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Ancaster averages 3.5 goals per game.

Ancaster also got points from Max Balinson, who also had one goal and two assists. Others who scored for Ancaster included Luke Zupan and Brennan McLennan, who scored one goal each. In addition, Ancaster received assists from Adam Burnett, Hayden Guitard, and Owen Burnell, who each chipped in one and Chris Klack and Ryan Knill, who contributed three each.

The Blackhawks' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Ancaster power plays. Thorold was held below its usual level of production. The Blackhawks average 2.4 goals per game.

The Avalanche incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Ian Shorthouse made 28 saves for Thorold on 34 shots. The Blackhawks incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors. Thorold ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Kyle Langdon was ejected from the game.
