Cambridge hangs on, beats Kitchener 3-1

Jake Moggy scored the go-ahead goal in the first period, and the Cambridge Winter Hawks held off the challenges of the Kitchener Dutchmen in a tough 3-1 win.

A goal 11:38 into the first period by Moggy proved to be the game winner, and powered Cambridge to the victory. Tyler Romain picked up the assist.

Mitch Atkins had a great game for the Winter Hawks, netting two goals. Atkins found the back of the net 4:09 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Cambridge and again while on the power play 13:23 into the second to make the score 3-1 Cambridge.

Cambridge was led by goalie Lucas Machalski, who finished with 49 saves while allowing one goal. Machalski certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.44 entering the contest.

The Winter Hawks stifled Kitchener's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Dutchmen were unable to stop Cambridge from sending pucks towards the net, and the Winter Hawks eventually piled up 32 shots on goal. Cambridge's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Winter Hawks finished with 26 penalty minutes.

More assists for Cambridge came via Matt Harding, Kalob Witzell, Alex Hulford, Drew Stirling, and Phil Caputo, who contributed one each.

Kitchener forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and one major for 41 minutes in penalty time. The Dutchmen surpassed its season average of 20.0 penalty minutes per game. Kitchener could not produce up to its normal offensive output. The Dutchmen put an average of 4.1 pucks into the net per game. Kitchener's offense rang up 50 shots on Cambridge's net.

The Dutchmen were led by Jeremy Kuehn, who scored the team's only goal. Kuehn scored 8:57 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Austin Gaboury provided the assist.

The Winter Hawks registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. Kitchener's Jackson McIntosh stopped 29 shots out of the 32 that he faced. The Dutchmen registered zero goals on six power play opportunities. For Kitchener, Nathan Grossi was ejected from the game.
