Welland outlasts St. Catharines, 4-3

The Welland Jr. Canadians gutted out a close 4-3 win against the St. Catharines Falcons.

Welland gained the winning advantage on a goal by Tyler Stranges 10:09 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer.

The Jr. Canadians were sparked by Stranges, who had one goal.

Penalties took their toll on Welland, as its penalty kill unit let in two power play goals.

Welland also got points from Jack Fitzgerald, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Kris Melna, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Cameron Aitken also scored for Welland. In addition, Welland received assists from Brayden Stortz, Matt Cuglietta, Nathan MacDuff, and Gabe Ruggi, who contributed one each.

The Jr. Canadians were unable to stop St. Catharines from sending pucks towards the net, and the Falcons eventually piled up 35 shots on goal. St. Catharines' penalty kill unit could not stop Welland's power play, which converted on two of three opportunities.

The Falcons were helped by Brandon Cercone, who grabbed one goal. Cercone scored on the power play 15:51 into the second period to make the score 2-2. A holding penalty on Ruggi had put St. Catharines on the power play. Tyler Hildebrant picked up the assist. St. Catharines additionally got points from Brock Ackerman, who also tallied one goal and one assist. St. Catharines also got a goal from Jake Evans as well. Other players who recorded assists for St. Catharines were Tyler Jackson, who had two and Ryan Doucette and Paolo De Sousa, who each chipped in one.

Hunter Johnson made 32 saves for the Jr. Canadians on 35 shots. Welland incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Jonathan D Ilario took the loss and made nine saves before being replaced by Ben Csiernik who made 10 saves. The Falcons incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with three minors.
