Strathroy uses early goal to top St. Marys, 5-3

Lucas Latina gave the Strathroy Rockets the lead in the first period, and the St. Marys Lincolns was never able to catch up in a close game that ended 5-3.

Latina provided Strathroy with the game-winning tally when he scored 3:49 into the first period. Nick Griffin picked up the assist.

The Rockets' penalty kill excelled, as Strathroy gave up one goal despite allowing seven power plays.

In the losing effort, St. Marys was led by Nathan Smith, who racked up two goals and one assist. Smith scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 9:45 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Strathroy. A unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Andrew Martin had put the Lincolns on the power play. Greg Swan assisted on the tally. Smith's next tally on the power play made the score 3-2 Strathroy with 2:06 left in the second period. A hooking call on Swan put St. Marys on the penalty kill. Jared Lindsay picked up the assist.

The Rockets' offense rang up 37 shots on the Lincolns' net.

Strathroy was helped by Ocean Check, who had one goal. Check scored short handed 1:20 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Strathroy. Strathroy additionally got points from Nick Boyer, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Strathroy included Joey Seney and Kurtis Sander, who scored one goal each. In addition, Strathroy received assists from Brett Dalton, who had two and Dalton Good, Stuart King, and Dylan Newman, who contributed one each.

St. Marys also got points from Swan, who also registered one goal and one assist. More assists for St. Marys came via Jake Alkins, who had one.

Dane Gubbels made 20 saves for the Rockets on 23 shots. Strathroy incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. The Rockets ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Latina was ejected from the game. Tyler Beattie rejected 32 shots on goal for St. Marys. The Lincolns incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
