Huge game by Hughes boosts Ancaster over Fort Erie, 6-1Morgan Firestone Thu, Feb 12, 2015 Story by Narrative Science.
The Ancaster Avalanche had a five-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 6-1 win over the Fort Erie Meteors. Ben Hughes was all over the ice for Ancaster, as he tallied two goals and two assists in the win. Hughes scored the first of his two goals at 4:20 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Ancaster. Ryan Knill provided the assist. Hughes' next tally made the score 3-0 Ancaster with 5:02 left in the first period. Lucas Triemstra assisted on the tally. The Avalanche's Matt Calas was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 28 saves and let only one puck past him. Calas managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 3.68 prior to the game. Ancaster forced Meteors' goalies to work between the pipes, getting 36 shots and forcing 30 saves. Liam Conway made six stops and Mackenzie Savard made 24. The Avalanche put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Fort Erie to score on any of its three power plays. Ancaster outdid its season average for goals scored. This season, the Avalanche average 3.3 goals per contest. Ancaster also got points from Chris Klack, who also grabbed two goals and one assist. Ancaster also got a goal from Jesse Hilton as well. In addition, Ancaster received assists from Adam Burnett, who had three and Michael Pollice, Max Balinson, and Alex Zaccaria, who each chipped in one. The Meteors forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up six minors and two majors for 32 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 26.0 minutes per game Fort Erie had been spending in the box. Dalton Tartaglia also scored for Fort Erie. More assists for Fort Erie came via Alex Hurran and Romaeo D Intino, who contributed one each. Ancaster totaled 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 1-for-7 on the power play. For the Avalanche, Hayden Guitard was ejected from the game. Team's Paolo Sivolotti, Tristan Drescher, and Anthony Passero were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
