St. Catharines uses shootout to best Niagara Falls, 2-1 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the St. Catharines Falcons defeated the Niagara Falls Canucks in a shootout 2-1 (2-1 SO).

The shootout featured 10 attempts between both teams. Niagara Falls' shootout goal was scored by Austin Wright. St. Catharines' other shootout goal was scored by Jake Evans.

The Falcons came back from a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. St. Catharines trailed 1-0 after a goal by the Canucks' Matthew Mannella at 5:53 in the first period. The Falcons knotted things up at 1-1 on a power play goal by Ryan Doucette at 19:51 in the second period.

St. Catharines excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. The Falcons could not produce up to their normal offensive output. St. Catharines puts an average of 4.3 pucks into the net per game. The Falcons forced Niagara Falls goalie Joseph Murdaca to work between the pipes, taking 40 shots.

More assists for St. Catharines came via Evans and Brandon Cercone, who contributed one each.

The Canucks' offense operated below their season average. Niagara Falls averages 3.5 goals per game.

Other players who recorded assists for Niagara Falls were Colton Anstey, who had one.

Ben Csiernik rejected 23 shots on goal for St. Catharines. The Falcons incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. The Canucks' Murdaca stopped 38 shots out of the 39 that he faced. Niagara Falls incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with three minors. The Canucks ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Zack Lansfield was ejected from the game.
