Ancaster boosted by Richard's play in net, beats Welland 2-1Morgan Firestone Sat, Feb 07, 2015 Story by Narrative Science.
Blake Richard stood on his head and made 40 saves to lead the Ancaster Avalanche to a 2-1 victory over the Welland Jr. Canadians. Welland's power play was ineffective against Ancaster's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded. The Avalanche were led by Adam Burnett, who finished with one goal and one assist. Burnett scored on the power play 18:44 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Ancaster. Ancaster had gained a power play chance when Kris Melna was whistled for checking from behind. Max Balinson assisted on the tally. The Avalanche put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Jr. Canadians to score on any of their nine power plays. Welland was unable to stop Ancaster from sending pucks towards the net, and the Avalanche eventually piled up 37 shots on goal. Ancaster could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 28 minutes in penalties during the game. Ancaster also got a goal from Michael Pollice as well. More assists for Ancaster came via Ben Hughes and Blake Luscombe, who contributed one each. The Jr. Canadians did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Welland averages 3.6 goals per game. The Jr. Canadians' offense rang up 41 shots on the Avalanche's net. Welland was led by Thomas Flack, who scored the team's only goal. Flack scored 14:00 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Mitch Reid picked up the assist. Ancaster registered two goals on six power play opportunities. For the Avalanche, Lucas Triemstra was ejected from the game. The Jr. Canadians' Hunter Johnson stopped 35 shots out of the 37 that he faced. Welland incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. For the Jr. Canadians, Melna and Matt Martin were ejected from the contest.
