Cambridge uses shootout to best Elmira, 4-3 (2-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Cambridge Winter Hawks defeated the Elmira Sugar Kings in a shootout 4-3 (2-0 SO).

The shootout lasted for five attempts between the teams. In addition to the clincher, Cambridge got a shootout goal from Maxime Lamontagne.

The Winter Hawks overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. Cambridge trailed 3-1 after a power play goal by Elmira's Mac Clutsam at 13:47 in the second period. The Winter Hawks tied things up at 4-4 on a goal by Mitch Klie at 5:00 in the fourth period.

Cambridge was led by Mitch Atkins, who had one goal.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 11:49 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Winter Hawks forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and two majors for 26 minutes in penalty time. Cambridge surpassed its season average of 22.0 penalty minutes per game.

Cambridge additionally got points from Alex Hulford, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Lamontagne, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Tyler Romain also scored for Cambridge. In addition, Cambridge received assists from Zack Magwood, Kyle Liu, and Jake Moggy, who contributed one each.

The Sugar Kings were often in penalty trouble, totaling 10 minors and two majors for 30 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 22.0 minutes per game Elmira had been spending in the box. The Sugar Kings' offense rang up 38 shots on the Winter Hawks' net.

Elmira was helped by Mitch Wright, who registered two goals and one assist. Wright scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 2:02 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Elmira. The Sugar Kings had taken the advantage when Cambridge's Atkins got sent off for high sticking. Zac Coulter assisted on the tally. Wright's next tally on the power play made the score 5-4 Elmira with 15:00 left in overtime. Elmira also got points from Klie, who also had one goal and one assist, Clutsam, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Coulter, who also registered one goal and one assist. More assists for Elmira came via Brodie Whitehead and Chad Herron, who each chipped in one.

Lucas Machalski made 35 saves for the Winter Hawks on 38 shots. Cambridge registered two goals on eight power play opportunities. For the Winter Hawks, Jordan Chard and Rob Grant were ejected from the contest. Elmira's Jonathan Reinhart stopped 23 shots out of the 26 that he faced. The Sugar Kings registered two goals on five power play opportunities. Team's Steven Jakiela, Coulter, and Connor Hall were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
