Chatham uses shootout to best Sarnia, 7-6 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Chatham Maroons defeated the Sarnia Legionnaires in a shootout 7-6 (1-0 SO).

The shootout featured six attempts between both teams.

Chatham came back from a four-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Maroons trailed 5-1 after a power play goal by Sarnia's Riley Babkirk at 1:35 in the second period. Chatham knotted things up at 6-6 on a power play goal by Cody Trowell at 14:54 in the third period.

The Maroons got the win thanks to a great game by Brennan Feasey, who had two goals and two assists. Feasey scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 15:09 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Sarnia. A high sticking penalty on Tyler Prong had put Chatham on the power play. Gus Ford picked up the assist. Feasey's next tally on the power play made the score 6-5 Chatham with 8:35 left in the third period. The Maroons had gotten the advantage when the Legionnaires' Ryan Trottier was sent off for slashing. Steven Szekesy assisted on the tally.

Chatham kept Sarnia's goalie busy throughout the game, and Andrew Masters made 53 saves on 60 shots. The Maroons outdid their season average for goals scored. Chatham has scored at the pace of 4.7 goals per game during the current campaign. The Maroons capitalized on the Legionnaires' penalties, netting five goals while skating with a man advantage.

Chatham additionally got points from Szekesy, who also racked up one goal and one assist, Ford, who also had one goal and two assists, and Alexander Morgan, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Jared Dennis also scored for Chatham. In addition, Chatham received assists from Connor Annett, Trevor Richardson, Nate Pietens, Brayden Hopkins, and Steven Beenackers, who contributed one each.

Chatham was unable to stop Sarnia from sending pucks towards the net, and the Legionnaires eventually piled up 37 shots on goal.

Sarnia also got points from Babkirk, who also registered one goal and one assist. Sarnia also got a goal from Ryan Vendramin as well. Other players who recorded assists for Sarnia were Bobby King, Cameron Clarke, and Kyler Keating, who each chipped in one and Jordan Fogarty and Brandon Layman, who contributed two each.

Jake Patterson made 31 saves for the Maroons on 37 shots. Chatham incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. Sarnia incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. The Legionnaires ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Hayden Allen was ejected from the game.
