St. Catharines uses early goal to top Niagara Falls, 5-3

The St. Catharines Falcons beat the Niagara Falls Canucks, 5-3, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

A goal 10:40 into the first period by Manny Manns proved to be the game winner, and powered St. Catharines to the victory. The Falcons had gotten the advantage when Niagara Falls' Mac Hollowell was sent off for cross checking. Connor Timmins provided the assist.

Brock Ackerman had a great game for St. Catharines, netting two goals. Ackerman scored at 4:49 into the second period to make the score 3-1 St. Catharines and again while 19:27 into the second to make the score 4-2 St. Catharines.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 15:12 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Falcons' penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and one major for 47 minutes in penalty time. St. Catharines surpassed its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game. The Falcons put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Canucks to score on any of their three power plays. St. Catharines forced Niagara Falls goalie Dylan Pietrangelo to work between the pipes, taking 31 shots.

St. Catharines also got a goal from Cam Blakely as well. More assists for St. Catharines came via Ryan Doucette, who had two, Tyler Morrison, who had four, and Tyler Jackson and Jake Evans, who contributed one each.

The Canucks were often in penalty trouble, totaling eight minors and one major for 41 minutes in penalty time. Niagara Falls had been averaging 26.0 minutes in penalties per game.

The Canucks were helped by Colton Anstey, who tallied one goal. Anstey scored 51 seconds into the third period to make the score 4-3 St. Catharines. Austin Wright picked up the assist. Others who scored for Niagara Falls included Matthew Mannella and Nigel Slade, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Niagara Falls were Frank Pucci, Zack Lansfield, Matthew Baldinelli, and Trevor Simonick, who each chipped in one.

Jonathan D Ilario rejected 26 shots on goal for the Falcons. St. Catharines registered two goals on four power play opportunities. Team's Timmins and Paolo De Sousa were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Pietrangelo recorded 26 saves for Niagara Falls. For the Canucks, Tanner Allen was ejected from the game.
