Welland outlasts Thorold, 5-3

The Welland Jr. Canadians and the Thorold Blackhawks were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Welland made the most of its opportunities and won, 5-3.

No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Jake Shaw at 3:06 of the third period.

The Jr. Canadians were sparked by Max Cipriano, who finished with one goal. Cipriano scored 3:58 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Welland. Gabe Ruggi provided the assist.

Welland's offense rang up 49 shots on Thorold's net.

Welland also got points from Kris Melna, who also grabbed one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Welland also had goals scored by Cole McKnight and Jack Fitzgerald, who each put in one. More assists for Welland came via Thomas Flack, Matt Martin, Adam Barron, Konner Roskovich, Josh Allan, Andy Paul, Cameron Aitken, and Tyler Stranges, who contributed one each.

The Blackhawks excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances.

Thorold was led by Tyler Sehovic, who tallied one goal and one assist. Sehovic scored on the power play 18:38 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Welland. The Blackhawks had gained a power play chance when Ruggi was whistled for roughing after whistle. Nick Prestia assisted on the tally. Others who scored for Thorold included Nick Giancola and Mitchell Mendonca, who scored one goal each. In addition, Thorold received assists from Dan Abbott, David Dagostino, Scott Dorion, and Anthony Postiglione, who each chipped in one.

Chris Janzen recorded 27 saves for the Jr. Canadians. Welland incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Thorold's Josh Astorino stopped 44 shots out of the 48 that he faced. The Blackhawks incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
