Stortz lifts Welland over Niagara Falls, 4-1

Brayden Stortz was all over the ice for the Welland Jr. Canadians, as he tallied two goals in Welland's 4-1 win over the Niagara Falls Canucks.

Stortz found the back of the net on the power play 5:28 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Welland and again while on the power play 9:50 into the third to make the score 3-1 Welland.

Niagara Falls was stymied by the Jr. Canadians' netminder Hunter Johnson, who stopped 31 shots during the victory. Johnson managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 3.56 prior to the game.

Welland pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 32 penalty minutes.

The Canucks were unable to stop the Jr. Canadians from sending pucks towards the net, and Welland eventually piled up 31 shots on goal. The Jr. Canadians excelled on the penalty kill, only allowing Niagara Falls to get one power play goal on 14 chances.

Welland also got points from Matt Cuglietta, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Cole McKnight also scored for Welland. In addition, Welland received assists from Jack Fitzgerald, Josh Allan, JC Thivierge, Gabe Ruggi, and Tyler Stranges, who contributed one each.

The Canucks' penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 12 minors and one major for 39 minutes in penalty time. Niagara Falls surpassed its season average of 25.0 penalty minutes per game. The Canucks were held below their usual level of production. Niagara Falls puts an average of 3.5 pucks into the net per game. The Canucks forced Welland goalie Johnson to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots.

Niagara Falls was led by Nigel Slade, who scored the team's only goal. Slade scored on the power play 11:07 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Niagara Falls. The Canucks had gained a power play chance when Cameron Aitken was whistled for unsportsmanlike conduct. Mac Hollowell picked up the assist.

The Jr. Canadians registered two goals on 12 power play opportunities. Dylan Pietrangelo recorded 27 saves for Niagara Falls. For the Canucks, Taggart Ledyard and Matthew Marsden were ejected from the contest.
