Welland rips Pelham, 9-1

The Welland Jr. Canadians had a four-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 9-1 win over the Pelham Panthers.

Welland was led by Jake Shaw, who grabbed one goal. Shaw scored on the power play 12:57 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Welland. The Jr. Canadians earned a power play opportunity when Jake DeMaeyer was put in the box for cross checking. JC Thivierge picked up the assist.

Welland excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. The Jr. Canadians forced Pelham goalie Daniel Kocsis to work between the pipes, taking 47 shots. Welland surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Jr. Canadians average 3.7 goals per game.

Welland also got points from Mitch Reid, who also racked up one goal and one assist, Josh Allan, who also had one goal and one assist, Thivierge, who also registered one goal and three assists to lead the team in points, and Tyler Stranges, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Welland included Max Cipriano, who had two and Brayden Stortz and Thomas Flack, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Welland were Adam Barron, who had three, Matt Cuglietta, Matt Martin, and Andy Paul, who each chipped in one, and Cole McKnight, Kris Melna, and Gabe Ruggi, who contributed two each.

The Panthers did not challenge the opposing netminder, only getting 11 shots on net to force 10 saves. Pelham could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 26 minutes in penalties during the game.

The Panthers were led by Riley O Connell, who scored the team's only goal. O Connell scored 6:57 into the third period to make the score 7-1 Welland. Thomas Young provided the assist.

Brandon McCorriston recorded 10 saves for Welland. The Jr. Canadians incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Daniel Kocsis made 38 saves for Pelham on 47 shots. The Panthers ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and DeMaeyer was ejected from the game.
