Stratford hangs on, beats Waterloo 2-0Waterloo Rec Complex Sat, Dec 20, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
The Stratford Cullitons took the lead against the Waterloo Siskins in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 2-0 victory. A goal 14:46 into the first period by Shane O Brien proved to be the game winner, and powered Stratford to the victory. Brook Hiddink picked up the assist.Nicholas Caldwell spearheaded the defensive effort for the Cullitons, as he did not allow a puck past him and made 35 saves for the shutout. Caldwell certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.36 entering the contest. Stratford was led by O Brien, who had one goal and one assist. The Cullitons put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Waterloo to score on any of its five power plays. Stratford could not produce up to its normal offensive output. The Cullitons put an average of 4.1 pucks into the net per game. Stratford's defensive play was more effective than usual against the Siskins. The Cullitons allow 2.6 goals per game. Stratford forced Waterloo goalie Evgeny Kiselev to work between the pipes, taking 37 shots. Jake Pleon also scored for Stratford. In addition, Stratford received assists from Deven Kropf, who had one. The Siskins managed to stay out of the box better than usual, registering one minor for two minutes in penalty time. Waterloo finished below its season average of 18.0 penalty minutes per game. The Siskins were held below their usual level of production. Waterloo averages 4.3 goals per game. The Cullitons were unable to stop the Siskins from sending pucks towards the net, and Waterloo eventually piled up 35 shots on goal. Stratford incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Evgeny Kiselev made 35 saves for the Siskins on 37 shots.
