Guelph uses shootout to best Waterloo, 6-5 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Guelph Hurricanes defeated the Waterloo Siskins in a shootout 6-5 (1-0 SO).

The shootout lasted for five attempts between the teams.

Matt Nightingale had two goals to lead Guelph to victory. Nightingale's tallies came at 12:09 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Guelph and 4:20 into the third to make the score 5-4 Guelph.

Waterloo was unable to stop the Hurricanes from sending pucks towards the net, and Guelph eventually piled up 45 shots on goal. The Hurricanes surpassed their usual scoring output this season. This season, Guelph averages 3.4 goals per contest. The defensemen of the Hurricanes were also effective in the Siskins' zone, and came away with two goals.

Guelph additionally got points from Brooker Muir, who also tallied one goal and two assists. Sheehan Kirkwood also scored for Guelph. In addition, Guelph received assists from Cameron Stokes, who had two, Ryan Migliaccio, who had three, and Lawrence Pagnan, Patrick Kudla, and Peyton Backus, who each chipped in one.

Waterloo forced Guelph goalie Jason DaSilva to work between the pipes, taking 38 shots. The Siskins found themselves short handed often, totaling 28 penalty minutes and allowing 10 power plays.

Waterloo was helped by Christian Mroczkowski, who had one goal and two assists. Mroczkowski scored on the power play 16:59 into the second period to make the score 4-4. A slashing penalty on Craig Martini had put the Siskins on the power play. Anthony Guido assisted on the tally. Waterloo also got points from Luke Gazzola, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Kyle Betts, who also registered one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Waterloo included Evan Kearns and Connor Bodnar, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Waterloo were Danny Hanlon, who had three and Matt Martin and Josh De Farias, who contributed one each.

DaSilva rejected 33 shots on goal for the Hurricanes. Guelph incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. For the Hurricanes, Jake Wyse was ejected from the game. Evgeny Kiselev made 39 saves for Waterloo on 44 shots. The Siskins registered two goals on seven power play opportunities.
