Leamington completes comeback, beats Chatham, 5-4

The Leamington Flyers climbed out of a two-goal hole to beat the Chatham Maroons, 5-4.

Leamington let multiple leads slip away before eventually digging out of a two hole to pick up the win. The Flyers took a 1-0 advantage on a goal by Cale Phibbs at 1:03 in the first period. Leamington went down 3-1 after Chatham's Steven Beenackers put the puck home at 12:34 in the first period. After tying things up at 4-4 on a power play goal by Tyler Duarte at 14:41 in the second, the Flyers got the game-winner from Blaine Bechard at 15:56 in the second period.

Duarte had a great game for Leamington, netting two goals.

The Maroons were unable to stop the Flyers from sending pucks towards the net, and Leamington eventually piled up 34 shots on goal.

Matthew Opblinger also scored for Leamington. More assists for Leamington came via J.P. Grineau, Alex Derksen, Eric Henderson, Chris Scott, and Zak Parlette, who each chipped in one.

Chatham's offense rang up 33 shots on the Flyers' net.

The Maroons were helped by Ian Faubert, who tallied one goal. Faubert scored 3:26 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Michael Verboom picked up the assist. Chatham also had goals scored by Trevor Richardson and Carl Stapleton, who scored one goal each. In addition, Chatham received assists from Jared Dennis, who had two and Levi Tetrault, Brayden Hopkins, and Brett Storr, who contributed one each.

Trevor Wheaton recorded 29 saves for Leamington. The Flyers totaled 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major and went 1-for-4 on the power play. For Leamington, Zack Guilbeault was ejected from the game. Chatham's Bo Bessette stopped 29 shots out of the 34 that he faced. The Maroons totaled 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 1-for-5 on the power play. Team's John Bowen and Hunter Burk (APJ) were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
