Astorino stymies Welland, Thorold wins 2-1

Thorold Community Arena    Wed, Dec 10, 2014

The Thorold Blackhawks relied on the sparkling performance of Josh Astorino in net to grab a 2-1 win against the Welland Jr. Canadians.

Thorold's penalty kill excelled, as the Blackhawks gave up one goal despite allowing nine power plays.

Thorold was paced by Quinn Geddes, who had one goal. Geddes scored 1:40 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Thorold.

Welland was unable to stop the Blackhawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Thorold eventually piled up 38 shots on goal.

Greg Christmas also scored for Thorold. In addition, Thorold received assists from Mitchell Mendonca, who had one.

The Jr. Canadians excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in seven chances. Welland did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. The Jr. Canadians average 3.4 goals per game. Welland forced the Blackhawks goalie Astorino to work between the pipes, taking 43 shots.

The Jr. Canadians were led by Tyler Stranges, who scored the team's only goal. Stranges scored on the power play 12:39 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Welland had gotten the advantage when Thorold's Alek Panov was sent off for fighting (instigator). Max Cipriano assisted on the tally.

Astorino recorded 42 saves for the Blackhawks. Thorold ended with 21 minutes in penalty time with eight minors and one major. For the Blackhawks, Panov and Scott Dorion were ejected from the contest. The Jr. Canadians' Brandon McCorriston stopped 36 shots out of the 38 that he faced. Welland incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
