Guelph rips Brantford, 5-1

The Guelph Hurricanes had a three-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 5-1 win over the Brantford 99ers.

Peyton Backus was all over the ice for Guelph, as he tallied one goal and three assists in the win. Backus scored 5:04 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Guelph.

The Hurricanes' penalty kill excelled, as Guelph gave up one goal despite allowing seven power plays.

The Hurricanes forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 22.0 minutes per game Guelph had been spending in the box. Brantford was unable to stop the Hurricanes from sending pucks towards the net, and Guelph eventually piled up 35 shots on goal.

Guelph also got points from Mackenzie Flewelling, who also racked up one goal and two assists and Craig Martini, who also registered two goals and one assist. Guelph also had goals scored by Jake Wyse and Giordano Finoro, who each put in one. In addition, Guelph received assists from Alex Remedios, Matt Nightingale, Patrick Kudla, and Cameron Stokes, who contributed one each.

The 99ers excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in seven chances. Brantford's offense operated below its season average. The 99ers average 3.2 goals per game. Brantford could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 34 minutes in penalties during the game.

The Hurricanes' Jeremie Lintner stopped 23 shots out of the 24 that he faced. For Guelph, Jordan Hatzinger was ejected from the game. Mathieu Kingsley rejected 30 shots on goal for the 99ers.
