Sarnia outlasts St. Thomas, 6-4

The Sarnia Legionnaires gutted out a close 6-4 win against the St. Thomas Stars.

No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Riley Babkirk at 8:17 of the third period.

Babkirk had a great game for Sarnia, netting two goals.

The Legionnaires kept St. Thomas' goalie busy throughout the game, and Dan Black made 26 saves on 32 shots. Sarnia struggled on the penalty kill, allowing the Stars to score two power play goals on three chances. The Legionnaires' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

Sarnia additionally got points from Jordan Fogarty, who also registered one goal and one assist. Sarnia also had goals scored by Brad Campbell, Cody Trowell, and Kyler Keating, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Sarnia were Ryan Vendramin, who had three and Riley Roberts, Hayden Allen, and Tyler Prong, who each chipped in one.

St. Thomas excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. The Stars forced Sarnia goalie Cornel Felder to work between the pipes, taking 43 shots.

St. Thomas was led by Zach Grzelewski, who finished with two goals and one assist. Grzelewski scored the first of his two goals at 37 seconds into the second period to make the score 1-1. Dane Johnstone picked up the assist. Grzelewski's next tally made the score 3-1 St. Thomas with 9:18 left in the second period. The Stars had gotten the advantage when the Legionnaires' Roberts was sent off for cross checking. Carson Moniz assisted on the tally. St. Thomas also got points from Johnstone, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Others who scored for St. Thomas included Josh Slegers and Wade Russell, who each put in one. More assists for St. Thomas came via Blair Mincer and Carson Brookshaw, who contributed one each.

Felder recorded 39 saves for Sarnia. The Legionnaires incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors. St. Thomas incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
