Sarnia stifles Chatham's comeback, gains 6-5 victory

The Sarnia Legionnaires, who led by three goals at one point, survived a comeback attempt by the Chatham Maroons and clinched a 6-5 victory.

Sarnia led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Legionnaires' Cody Trowell scored at 3:50 in the second period to put Sarnia up 5-2.

The Legionnaires was paced on offense by Ryan Vendramin and Jake O`Donnell, who combined for four points. Vendramin had two goals and one assist and O`Donnell also added one goal.

Sarnia's penalty kill was ineffective, and let in two goals to Chatham's power play unit.

Sarnia additionally got points from Trowell, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Riley Babkirk, who also registered one goal and one assist. Sarnia also got a goal from Davis Boyer as well. More assists for Sarnia came via Nathan Mater, Jordan Fogarty, and Cameron Clarke, who contributed one each and Jay Clarke and Riley Roberts, who each chipped in two.

The Maroons were helped by Michael Levesque, who grabbed two goals. Levesque scored the first of his two goals at 15:04 into the second period to make the score 5-4 Sarnia. Brayden Hopkins assisted on the tally. Levesque's next tally made the score 5-5 with 44 seconds left in the second period. Steven Beenackers picked up the assist. Chatham also got points from Hopkins, who also registered one goal and two assists and Beenackers, who also racked up one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Steven Szekesy also scored for Chatham. In addition, Chatham received assists from Trevor Richardson, Jared Dennis, Nate Pietens, Michael Verboom, Alexander Morgan, and Brennan Feasey, who contributed one each.

Hunter Johnson made 22 saves for the Legionnaires on 27 shots. Sarnia totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 0-for-1 on the power play. For the Legionnaires, PJ Vandervaart was ejected from the game. Chatham took out Bo Bessette after he had made 13 saves and installed Jake Patterson in goal, where he finished with 10 saves and the loss. The Maroons ended with seven minutes in penalty time with one minor and one major. Chatham ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and John Bowen was ejected from the game.
