Stratford's comeback falls short, Elmira wins 4-2

The Elmira Sugar Kings, who led by three goals at one point, survived a comeback attempt by the Stratford Cullitons and clinched a 4-2 victory.

Elmira led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Sugar Kings' Steven Jakiela scored at 4:32 in the third period to put Elmira up 3-0.

The Sugar Kings' penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 11 minors and four majors for 52 minutes in penalty time. Elmira surpassed its season average of 24.0 penalty minutes per game.

The Sugar Kings were led by Mitch Klie, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Klie scored 19:58 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Elmira. Elmira also had goals scored by Rob Kohli and Alex Mutton, who scored one goal each. More assists for Elmira came via Jamie Huber, who had two and Adam Brubacher and Zac Coulter, who each chipped in one.

Stratford was often in penalty trouble, totaling eight minors and two majors for 36 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 28.0 minutes per game the Cullitons had been spending in the box. Stratford could not produce up to its normal offensive output. The Cullitons put an average of 4.2 pucks into the net per game. Elmira was unable to stop Stratford from sending pucks towards the net, and the Cullitons eventually piled up 33 shots on goal. Stratford was held back by its power play unit, which tallied two goals on 11 chances.

The Cullitons were helped by Hayden Broomhead, who had one goal. Broomhead scored on the power play 8:26 into the third period to make the score 3-1 Elmira. Stratford had gained a power play chance when Brodie Whitehead was whistled for fighting (instigator). Mitch Brooks provided the assist. Stratford also got a goal from Shane O Brien as well. In addition, Stratford received assists from Trevor Sauder, who had one and Deven Kropf, who had two.

Jonathan Reinhart recorded 31 saves for the Sugar Kings. Elmira registered one goal on eight power play opportunities. For the Sugar Kings, Whitehead, Mutton, Klayton Hoelscher, Cash Seraphim, and Connor Hall were ejected from the contest. The Cullitons' Nicholas Caldwell stopped 22 shots out of the 25 that he faced. Team's Tyson Baker and Mitch Vandergunst were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
