Barrett stymies St. Thomas, Leamington wins 4-1

A stellar performance between the pipes by Michael Barrett helped the Leamington Flyers defeat the St. Thomas Stars, 4-1.

Alex Friesen had a great game for Leamington, netting two goals. Friesen scored at 8:42 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Leamington and again while 2:41 into the third to make the score 4-1 Leamington.

St. Thomas' power play was ineffective against the Flyers' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 8:44 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

Leamington struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as it finished the game with 26 penalty minutes for six opposing power plays.

Leamington also had goals scored by Tyler Scott and Chris Scott, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Leamington were Cale Phibbs and Kyle Quick, who each chipped in one and Mitchell Amante and Kyle Perkowski, who contributed two each.

The Stars were held below their usual level of production. St. Thomas puts an average of 3.1 pucks into the net per game.

The Stars were led by Blair Mincer, who scored the team's only goal. Mincer scored on the power play 16:14 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Leamington. St. Thomas had gotten the advantage when the Flyers' Ryan Muzzin was sent off for cross checking. John Warren picked up the assist.

Michael Barrett made 27 saves for Leamington on 28 shots. The Flyers registered one goal on four power play opportunities. Team's Muzzin and Colin Moore were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Nikolas Dampier recorded 26 saves for the Stars. St. Thomas ended with 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors and two majors. For the Stars, Anders Adzija and Mark Brisson were ejected from the contest.
