Welland outlasts Thorold, 4-2

The Welland Jr. Canadians gutted out a close 4-2 win against the Thorold Blackhawks.

No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Matt Martin at 2:41 of the third period.

Welland got the win behind a great game by Jack Fitzgerald, who had two goals and one assist. Fitzgerald scored the first of his two goals at 1:30 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Welland. Brayden Stortz provided the assist. Fitzgerald's next tally made the score 2-0 Welland with 2:04 left in the second period. Stortz assisted on the tally.

Thorold was unable to stop the Jr. Canadians from sending pucks towards the net, and Welland eventually piled up 44 shots on goal.

Welland also got points from Matt Cuglietta, who also tallied one goal and two assists. In addition, Welland received assists from Cole McKnight, who had one.

The Blackhawks' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Welland power plays. Thorold kept the Jr. Canadians' goalie busy throughout the game, and Brandon McCorriston made 30 saves on 32 shots.

The Blackhawks were helped by Anthony Postiglione, who registered one goal. Postiglione scored 18:55 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Welland. Francois Plamondon picked up the assist. David Dagostino also scored for Thorold. More assists for Thorold came via Greg Christmas and Justin Whitwell, who contributed one each.

Welland incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Ian Shorthouse rejected 40 shots on goal for Thorold. The Blackhawks incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Thorold ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jake Lloyd was ejected from the game.
