Smith's hat trick boosts Kitchener over Guelph, 5-2

Mitchell Smith netted a hat trick to lead the Kitchener Dutchmen over the Guelph Hurricanes, 5-2.

Smith notched his first tally 19:24 into the first period. He then added goals at 17:49 into the second and at 10:34 into the third.

Guelph's power play was ineffective against Kitchener's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 7:56 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Dutchmen were often in penalty trouble, totaling six minors and two majors for 32 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 20.0 minutes per game Kitchener had been spending in the box. The Dutchmen forced the Hurricanes goalie Jeremie Lintner to work between the pipes, taking 47 shots.

Kitchener also got points from Connor Cole, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Keegan Calder also scored for Kitchener. Other players who recorded assists for Kitchener were Harrison Domagala, Kyle Ellis, and Adam Kawalec, who contributed one each.

Guelph kept Kitchener's goalie busy throughout the game, and Jackson McIntosh made 37 saves on 39 shots.

The Hurricanes were helped by Peyton Backus, who tallied one goal. Backus scored 5:54 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Kitchener. Patrick Kudla assisted on the tally. Guelph also got a goal from Michael Courvoisier as well. In addition, Guelph received assists from Craig Martini and Ryan Migliaccio, who each chipped in one.

The Dutchmen registered one goal on four power play opportunities. Team's Sean Allen and Alex Demrovsky were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Lintner rejected 42 shots on goal for Guelph. The Hurricanes ended with 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major. For Guelph, Sheehan Kirkwood and Lawrence Pagnan were ejected from the contest.
