Sarnia wins tough contest against St. Thomas, 3-2Sarnia Arena Thu, Oct 30, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
The Sarnia Legionnaires gutted out a close 3-2 win against the St. Thomas Stars. Sarnia gained the winning advantage on a goal by Cody Trowell 18:58 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer. Trowell had a great game for the Legionnaires, netting two goals. Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 19:20 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts. Sarnia racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 20.0 minutes per game the Legionnaires had been spending in the box. Sarnia's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three St. Thomas power plays. The Legionnaires were held below their usual level of production. Sarnia averages 5.4 goals per game. The Legionnaires' offense rang up 35 shots on St. Thomas' net. Sarnia also got a goal from Ryan Lyle as well. In addition, Sarnia received assists from Davis Boyer, who had two and Nathan Mater, Bobby King, Brandon Layman, and PJ Vandervaart, who each chipped in one. The Stars forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up nine minors and one major for 43 minutes in penalty time. St. Thomas surpassed its season average of 17.0 penalty minutes per game. The Stars stifled Sarnia's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. St. Thomas was helped by Zach Grzelewski, who registered one goal. Grzelewski scored 4:22 into the first period to make the score 2-2. Dane Johnstone picked up the assist. Carter McCormick also scored for St. Thomas. More assists for St. Thomas came via John Warren, who had two. Hunter Johnson rejected 21 shots on goal for the Legionnaires. Sarnia registered zero goals on five power play opportunities. The Legionnaires ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Sam McCormack was ejected from the game. Nikolas Dampier made 32 saves for the Stars on 35 shots. For St. Thomas, Carson Moniz was ejected from the game.
