Beenackers' big game bests Sarnia in 8-2 Chatham win

Behind a great game by Steven Beenackers, who had two goals and one assist, the Chatham Maroons defeated the Sarnia Legionnaires, 8-2.

Beenackers found the back of the net 5:56 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Chatham and again while 25 seconds into the second to make the score 3-0 Chatham.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 7:56 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Chatham forced Sarnia's goalies to work all game long, getting 65 shots and forcing 57 saves. Hunter Johnson made 42 stops and Cornel Felder made 15. The Maroons surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Chatham averages 4.8 goals per game. The Maroons were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 23 penalty minutes.

Chatham also got points from Jared Dennis, who also registered one goal and one assist and Michael Verboom, who also had one goal and four assists to lead the team in points. Chatham also got a goal from Brennan Feasey as well. More assists for Chatham came via Brayden Hopkins, who had three and Trevor Richardson, Carl Stapleton, Levi Tetrault, John Bowen, and Ian Faubert, who each chipped in one.

The Legionnaires' offense operated below their season average. Sarnia averages 5.8 goals per game.

Others who scored for Sarnia included Riley Roberts and Kyler Keating, who each put in one. In addition, Sarnia received assists from Cody Trowell, Davis Boyer, and Cameron Clarke, who contributed one each.

Bo Bessette recorded 26 saves for Chatham. The Maroons registered one goal on three power play opportunities. For Chatham, Richardson was ejected from the game. The Legionnaires totaled 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 2-for-7 on the power play. Sarnia ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Riley Babkirk was ejected from the game.
