Welland uses shootout to best Ancaster, 4-3 (4-3 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Welland Jr. Canadians defeated the Ancaster Avalanche in a shootout 4-3 (4-3 SO).

The shootout featured 26 attempts between both teams. Ancaster got shootout goals from Cooper Richards, Ryan Knill, and Lucas Triemstra. Welland also got shootout goals from Francois Plamondon, JC Thivierge, and Kris Melna.

The Jr. Canadians came back from a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. Welland trailed 3-1 after a goal by the Avalanche's Michael Faliero at 1:24 in the third period. The Jr. Canadians knotted things up at 3-3 on a goal by Josh Allan at 19:57 in the third period.

Welland got the win with help from a great game by Mitch Reid, who had one goal and two assists. Reid scored on the power play 7:09 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Welland. The Jr. Canadians had gotten the advantage when Ancaster's Marcus Baird was sent off for interference. Jack Fitzgerald picked up the assist.

Welland forced the Avalanche's goalies to work without much rest, getting 49 shots and forcing 45 saves. Matt Calas made 22 stops and Blake Richard made 23. The Jr. Canadians excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

Welland also got a goal from Nathan MacDuff as well. In addition, Welland received assists from Thomas Flack, Thivierge, and Jake Shaw, who contributed one each.

Welland was unable to stop Ancaster from sending pucks towards the net, and the Avalanche eventually piled up 32 shots on goal. Ancaster was often in penalty trouble, as it ended with seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time.

Richards also scored for Ancaster. Other players who recorded assists for Ancaster were Blake Luscombe, who had two and Cole Nagy and Ryan Cox, who each chipped in one.

Chris Janzen recorded 29 saves for the Jr. Canadians. Welland incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Team's Max Balinson and Cox were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
