Brantford's Atkins deadly on offense in 6-3 win against Listowel

The Brantford 99ers relied on the scoring touch of Mitch Atkins, who netted two goals, to beat the Listowel Cyclones, 6-3.

Atkins scored on the power play at 24 seconds into the second period to make the score 1-1 and again while 11:38 into the third to make the score 4-3 Brantford.

Brantford's penalty kill excelled, as the 99ers gave up zero goals despite allowing six power plays.

Brantford stifled Listowel's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The defensemen of the 99ers were also effective in the Cyclones' zone, and came away with two goals.

Brantford additionally got points from Gus Ford, who also tallied one goal and two assists to lead the team in points, Nathan Ferris, who also had one goal and one assist, Paris Briscoe, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Keegan Alvestad, who also registered one goal and one assist. In addition, Brantford received assists from Zander Pryor, who had two and Guy Polillo, Cole Cummings, and Mathieu Kingsley, who each chipped in one.

Brantford was unable to stop Listowel from sending pucks towards the net, and the Cyclones eventually piled up 31 shots on goal. Penalties took their toll on Listowel, as its penalty kill unit let in two power play goals.

The Cyclones were led by Ben Shelley, who tallied one goal and one assist. Shelley scored 1:57 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Listowel. Chad Lemire assisted on the tally. Others who scored for Listowel included Blake Pickering and Ray McFalls, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Listowel were Jordan Caskenette, Brad Yowart, and Ryan Hergott, who contributed one each.

Mathieu Kingsley made 28 saves for the 99ers on 31 shots. Brantford incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors. Listowel's Hergott stopped 18 shots out of the 23 that he faced. The Cyclones incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Listowel ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Yowart was ejected from the game.
