Welland outlasts Thorold, 4-2Thorold Community Arena Wed, Oct 15, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Welland Jr. Canadians escaped with a 4-2 victory over the Thorold Blackhawks. Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Jack Fitzgerald's goal in the second period proved to be the difference maker. Damien Lalonde had a great game for Welland, netting two goals. Lalonde scored at 10:05 into the second period to make the score 2-2 and again while 10:13 into the third to make the score 4-2 Welland. The Jr. Canadians' penalty kill excelled, as Welland gave up one goal despite allowing seven power plays. The Jr. Canadians forced Thorold goalie Josh Astorino to work between the pipes, taking 41 shots. Team could not crack the Blackhawks' penalty kill and was held to two power play goals while having 10 opportunities to play with the man advantage. Brayden Stortz also scored for Welland. In addition, Welland received assists from Matt Cuglietta, who had two and Cristian DiFonzo, Mitch Reid, Nathan MacDuff, Matt Martin, Josh Allan, and Andy Paul, who contributed one each. Thorold kept Welland's goalie busy throughout the game, and Chris Janzen made 36 saves on 38 shots. The Blackhawks' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Thorold finished with 28 penalty minutes. The Blackhawks were helped by Anthony Postiglione, who had one goal. Postiglione scored on the power play 7:34 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Thorold. Thorold had gotten the advantage when the Jr. Canadians' Fitzgerald was sent off for head contact. Connor Timmins picked up the assist. Thorold also got a goal from Nathan Dosa as well. Welland incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Josh Astorino made 37 saves for the Blackhawks on 41 shots.
