Chatham survives Leamington comeback, wins 8-7

The Leamington Flyers tried to dig themselves out of a four-goal hole, but the Chatham Maroons held on for an 8-7 victory.

Chatham made the score 6-2 on a goal by Dede Cato at 4:02 in the third period, and Leamington got as close as 6-5 when Mitchell Amante scored 9:03 into the third period.

Jared Dennis had a great game for the Maroons, netting two goals. Dennis' tallies came at 12:34 into the first period to make the score 1-1 and short handed 19:20 into the third to make the score 9-7 Chatham.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 7:43 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with four game misconducts.

Chatham forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 10 minors and three majors for 45 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 19.0 minutes per game the Maroons had been spending in the box. Chatham forced the Flyers' goalies to work in net, launching 48 shots and forcing 40 saves. Michael Barrett made 17 stops and Trevor Wheaton made 23. The Maroons bested their season scoring average. This season, Chatham averages 4.4 goals per contest.

Chatham also got points from Trevor Richardson, who also finished with two goals and one assist, Michael Verboom, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Brennan Feasey, who also registered two goals and one assist to lead the team in points. Mark Fratarcangelli also scored for Chatham. Other players who recorded assists for Chatham were Carl Stapleton, Levi Tetrault, Brayden Hopkins, and Hunter Burk, who each chipped in one and Steven Szekesy, John Bowen, Steven Beenackers, and Ian Faubert, who contributed two each.

Leamington's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 10 minors and three majors for 45 minutes in penalty time. The Flyers surpassed its season average of 23.0 penalty minutes per game. Leamington kept the Maroons' goalie busy throughout the game, and Bo Bessette made 41 saves on 48 shots. The Flyers found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. Leamington averages 4.2 goals per game. The Flyers' defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. Leamington averages 2.5 goals allowed per game.

Leamington additionally got points from Chris Scott, who also grabbed one goal and three assists to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Leamington included Colin Moore and Alex Friesen, who scored one goal each. More assists for Leamington came via Matthew Opblinger and Zak Parlette, who each chipped in one and Ryan Muzzin and Eric Henderson, who contributed two each.

Chatham registered two goals on eight power play opportunities. Team's Connor McKinnon, Hopkins, Michael Levesque, and Feasey were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. The Flyers registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. For Leamington, Cale Phibbs, Zack Guilbeault, and Thomas Virban were ejected from the contest.
