Elmira vanquishes Listowel in shootout, 3-2 (1-0 SO)

GOJHL Head Office    Fri, Oct 03, 2014

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Elmira Sugar Kings defeated the Listowel Cyclones in a shootout 3-2 (1-0 SO).

The two teams needed five turns to complete the shootout.

Listowel's power play was ineffective against Elmira's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

In the losing effort, the Cyclones were led by Derek Elliot, who had two goals. Elliot scored the first of his two goals at 14:17 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Listowel. Ben VanOotegham assisted on the tally. Elliot's next tally made the score 2-2 with 12:26 left in the third period. Listowel played down a man on Broedy Karelse's goalie interference. Riley Robertson picked up the assist.

The Sugar Kings' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six Listowel power plays.

Elmira was helped by Klayton Hoelscher, who grabbed one goal. Hoelscher scored 7:39 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Elmira. Steven Jakiela assisted on the tally. Ethan Skinner also scored for Elmira. Other players who recorded assists for Elmira were Sam Harris, Rob Kohli, and Brendan Schneider, who contributed one each.

The Cyclones' offense rang up 32 shots on the Sugar Kings' net.

Elmira's Jonathan Reinhart stopped 30 shots out of the 32 that he faced. The Sugar Kings incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. For Elmira, Brodie Whitehead was ejected from the game. Ryan Hergott made 17 saves for Listowel on 19 shots. The Cyclones incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
