Sarnia outlasts Strathroy, 3-2

The game between the Sarnia Legionnaires and the Strathroy Rockets was tight through all 60 minutes, but in the end Sarnia emerged with a 3-2 win.

The Legionnaires gained the winning advantage on a goal by Nathan Mater 17:34 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer.

Sarnia was sparked by Mater, who finished with one goal.

In a losing effort, Strathroy was paced by Sam Vokes, who racked up two goals. Vokes scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 16:18 into the second period to make the score 1-1. The Rockets earned a power play opportunity when Tyler Prong was put in the box for high sticking. Tyler Duarte picked up the assist. Vokes' next tally on the power play made the score 2-1 Strathroy with 5:00 left in the third period. Strathroy had gotten the advantage when the Legionnaires' Jake O`Donnell was sent off for hooking. Brett Dalton provided the assist.

Sarnia was held below its usual level of production. The Legionnaires put an average of 5.9 pucks into the net per game. Sarnia kept the Rockets' goalie busy throughout the game, and Tynan Lauziere made 37 saves on 40 shots.

Sarnia also got points from Riley Babkirk, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Jordan Fogarty, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for Sarnia came via Riley Roberts and Bobby King, who contributed one each.

Strathroy put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Legionnaires to score on any of their three power plays. The Rockets' offense rang up 31 shots on Sarnia's net.

In addition, Strathroy received assists from Matt Laberge and Kurtis Sander, who each chipped in one.

The Legionnaires' Cornel Felder stopped 29 shots out of the 31 that he faced. Sarnia incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Strathroy incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
