Welland rips Ancaster, 7-0

The Welland Jr. Canadians had a three-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 7-0 win over the Ancaster Avalanche.

Welland was sparked by Jake Shaw, who finished with one goal and one assist. Shaw scored on the power play 9:24 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Welland. The Jr. Canadians earned a power play opportunity when Spencer Leenders was put in the box for high sticking. Tyler Stranges provided the assist.

Welland forced Ancaster's goalies to work all game long, launching 36 shots and forcing 29 saves. Matt Calas made 13 stops and Gavin Herring made 16. The Jr. Canadians put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Avalanche to score on any of their five power plays. Welland bested its season scoring average. This season, the Jr. Canadians average 4.8 goals per contest.

Welland also got points from Thomas Flack, who also grabbed one goal and two assists and Kris Melna, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Matt Cuglietta also scored for Welland. Other players who recorded assists for Welland were Josh Allan, who had two, Gabe Ruggi, who had four, and Jack Fitzgerald and JC Thivierge, who each chipped in one.

Ancaster could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 80 minutes in penalties during the game.

Welland's Chris Janzen stopped 23 shots out of the 23 that he faced. The Jr. Canadians incurred 32 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
