St. Thomas vanquishes St. Marys in shootout, 3-2 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the St. Thomas Stars defeated the St. Marys Lincolns in a shootout 3-2 (2-1 SO).

The two teams needed eight turns to complete the shootout. St. Marys got a shootout goal from Mitch Read. St. Thomas also got a shootout goal from John Warren.

The Stars' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four St. Marys power plays. St. Thomas' offense rang up 35 shots on the Lincolns' net.

The Stars were helped by Reed Horvat, who tallied one goal. Horvat scored on the power play 11:37 into the first period to make the score 1-0 St. Thomas. St. Thomas had gotten the advantage when St. Marys' Sean O`Brien was sent off for cross checking. Matt McJannet picked up the assist. Brett Van Dusen also scored for St. Thomas. More assists for St. Thomas came via Mark Brisson and Wade Russell, who each chipped in one.

The Lincolns kept the Stars' goalie busy throughout the game, and Nikolas Dampier made 30 saves on 32 shots.

St. Marys was helped by Read, who tallied one goal. Read scored 16:24 into the third period to make the score 2-2. Jake Alkins assisted on the tally. St. Marys also got a goal from Garrett James as well. Other players who recorded assists for St. Marys were Chace Duckworth, who had one and Nathan Smith, who had two.

St. Thomas incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors. Andrew Masters recorded 32 saves for the Lincolns. St. Marys incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
