Waterloo shrugs off penalties, upends Guelph, 4-0

The Waterloo Siskins, which found themselves down a man often, weathered the Guelph Hurricanes' power play opportunities and emerged with a 4-0 victory.

Waterloo was paced by Gary Mantz, who racked up one goal and one assist. Mantz scored on the power play 12:49 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Waterloo. The Siskins had taken the advantage when Guelph's Sheehan Kirkwood got sent off for ineligible player. Kyle Betts picked up the assist.

Waterloo stifled the Hurricanes' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Siskins were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 24 penalty minutes.

Waterloo additionally got points from Christian Mroczkowski, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Betts, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Eric Cimino also scored for Waterloo. In addition, Waterloo received assists from Ethan Hebel (APM), Evan Kearns, Tommy Rietema, Chase Campbell, and Danny Hanlon, who contributed one each.

Guelph's offense operated below its season average. The Hurricanes put an average of 3.5 pucks into the net per game.

Evgeny Kiselev recorded 24 saves for Waterloo. The Siskins registered two goals on nine power play opportunities. Guelph's Jeremie Lintner stopped 26 shots out of the 30 that he faced. The Hurricanes incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with 11 minors.
