Welland hangs on, beats Fort Erie 3-1

Fort Erie Leisureplex    Sat, Sep 20, 2014

Kris Melna scored the go-ahead goal in the first period, and the Welland Jr. Canadians held off the challenges of the Fort Erie Meteors in a tough 3-1 win.

Melna provided Welland with the game-winning tally when he scored 10:48 into the first period. Jake Shaw provided the assist.

Melna had a great game for the Jr. Canadians, netting two goals.

Welland pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 20 penalty minutes.

The Jr. Canadians stifled Fort Erie's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Meteors were unable to stop Welland from sending pucks towards the net, and the Jr. Canadians eventually piled up 37 shots on goal.

Jack Fitzgerald also scored for Welland. In addition, Welland received assists from Matt Cuglietta, Nathan MacDuff, JC Thivierge, and Andy Paul, who each chipped in one.

Fort Erie was led by Devin Darrah, who scored the team's only goal. Darrah scored 14:06 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Welland. Hurren Alex assisted on the tally.
