Stratford pulls away in second, rolls over Guelph, 6-1

The Stratford Cullitons used a four-goal second period to put away the Guelph Hurricanes, 6-1.

Stratford was led by goalie Nicholas Caldwell, who finished with 42 saves while allowing one goal. Caldwell certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 1.5 entering the contest.

Guelph's power play was ineffective against the Cullitons' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Stratford forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 21 minors and two majors for 62 minutes in penalty time. The Cullitons surpassed its season average of 37.0 penalty minutes per game. Stratford forced the Hurricanes' goaltenders to work between the pipes, firing 48 shots and forcing 42 saves. Liam Devine made 34 stops and Jeremie Lintner made eight.

The Cullitons were helped by Nathan Templeman, who tallied one goal. Templeman scored 6:03 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Stratford. Austin Huizenga assisted on the tally. Stratford also got points from Deven Kropf, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Justin Graham, who also had one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Stratford included Josh Miller, Jake Pleon, and Mitch Brooks, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Stratford were Zach Van Louwe, Tyson Baker, and Jeff McArdle, who each chipped in one and Carter Allen and Shane O Brien, who contributed two each.

Guelph's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 11 minors and two majors for 32 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 21.0 minutes per game the Hurricanes had been spending in the box. Guelph did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. The Hurricanes put an average of 4.7 pucks into the net per game. Stratford was unable to stop Guelph from sending pucks towards the net, and the Hurricanes eventually piled up 43 shots on goal.

Guelph also got a goal from Sheehan Kirkwood as well. In addition, Guelph received assists from Sebastian Stangherlin and Brooker Muir, who each chipped in one.

The Cullitons registered two goals on six power play opportunities. Team's Matthieu Bourbeau, Miller, and Baker were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. For Guelph, Mackenzie Flewelling, Matt Nightingale, and Peyton Backus were ejected from the contest.
