Leamington uses early goal to top St. Thomas, 3-1

Alex Derksen scored the go-ahead goal in the first period, and the Leamington Flyers held off the challenges of the St. Thomas Stars in a tough 3-1 win.

Leamington took over the lead for good with a goal by Derksen at 8:50 in the first period. Kyle Quick picked up the assist.

The Flyers' penalty kill excelled, as Leamington gave up one goal despite allowing eight power plays.

The Flyers were led by Thomas Virban, who registered one goal. Virban scored 11:20 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Leamington. Mitchell Amante provided the assist.

The defensemen of Leamington were also effective in St. Thomas' zone, and came away with two goals.

Kyle Perkowski also scored for Leamington. More assists for Leamington came via Cale Phibbs, Eric Henderson, Matthew Opblinger, and Alex Friesen, who each chipped in one.

The Stars' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Leamington power plays.

St. Thomas was led by Wade Russell, who scored the team's only goal. Russell scored on the power play 13:14 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Leamington. The Stars earned a power play opportunity when Zak Parlette was put in the box for hooking. Jordan Babb picked up the assist.

Trevor Wheaton recorded 14 saves for the Flyers. Leamington incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. For the Flyers, Virban was ejected from the game. St. Thomas' Nikolas Dampier stopped 26 shots out of the 29 that he faced. The Stars incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
