Thorold vanquishes Fort Erie in shootout, 3-2 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Thorold Blackhawks defeated the Fort Erie Meteors in a shootout 3-2 (2-1 SO).

The shootout featured six attempts between both teams. Fort Erie's shootout goal was scored by Wade Kenny. Thorold also got a shootout goal from Mitchell Mendonca.

The Blackhawks saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. Thorold made the score 2-0 on a goal by Nick Sacco at 15:48 in the second period. The Meteors evened things up at 2-2 on a goal by Dakota Miskolczi at 11:52 in the third period.

Fort Erie's power play was ineffective against the Blackhawks' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 13:53 into the first period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Thorold excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in nine chances. The Meteors were unable to stop the Blackhawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Thorold eventually piled up 36 shots on goal.

Thorold also got points from Mendonca, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. In addition, Thorold received assists from Josh Astorino, Greg Christmas, and Tyler Sehovic, who each chipped in one.

Fort Erie forced the Blackhawks goalie Astorino to work between the pipes, taking 33 shots.

The Meteors were helped by Matthew Matyi, who grabbed one goal. Matyi scored 1:25 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Thorold. Vincent Robbins assisted on the tally. Other players who recorded assists for Fort Erie were Tristan Drescher, Delcan Conway, and Holden Garlent, who contributed one each.

Thorold's Astorino stopped 31 shots out of the 33 that he faced. The Blackhawks totaled 21 minutes in penalty time with eight minors and one major and went 1-for-7 on the power play. For Thorold, Vito Scaringi, Justin Whitwell, and Alek Panov were ejected from the contest. Liam Conway made 33 saves for Fort Erie on 35 shots. The Meteors ended with 19 minutes in penalty time with seven minors and one major. Team's Paolo Sivolotti and Josh Micallef were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
